Scotch Yoke Mechanism Modeling

This solid model of a Scotch Yoke mechanism demonstrates my measuring and modeling skills as a potential engineering designer.

Precise measuring is crucial for engineering designers in order to create dimensionally accurate components. As a result, each component will fit with the others. In case of missing some of the trivial measurements, reasonable guess on the dimension is also necessary, which will incorporate with other precise measurements.

Although for this dissection, the task is merely to demonstrate functionality of the mechanism by using simple geometric representations, our design group of three still decided to go into details to have a structurally precise model.

The extra details added on the mechanism, including the custom made gear teeth and the slot mate, demonstrates our curiosity as engineering designers. Initial curiosity may lead to endless innovation, which is a must-have characteristic for engineering designers.

However, there is a major flaw present on the mechanism, neglected by three of us. Due to frequent dissecting of the mechanism, a rod cap may be missing. As the result, the gear rod diameter is too thin to perfectly fit in the slot of the yoke, this scotch yoke mechanism may not work as well as it supposed to be. Slip and not fully constrained motion will occur thanks to the lack of friction between the gear rod and the yoke slot. As engineering designers, precaution should be drawn onto this mechanical flaw, and in-time reinforcement and improvement should be added to the mechanism.

Though, a dimensionally precise model was created for the mechanism, critical analysis on functionality of the mechanism is what we should work on and improve.
